When you get stuck and need to recover your vehicle, or if you are recovering some else’s vehicle, you need to hook your winch to the proper recovery points. The recovery points on a vehicle are the hooks or holes which are anchored to the chassis and allow for towing while minimizing the risk of damage. Failure to use the proper recovery points is going to result in damage to the vehicle.
This video drives home the message that if you need to recover a stuck vehicle, you need to locate the PROPER recovery points — emphasize proper!
On your vehicle, there should be points of recover and the front and rear of your rig. You can find out where the exact location is by consulting the owner’s manual for your specific vehicle.
Some vehicles are going to call for assembly of the recovery point. The tools to do so are usually located with the spare tire in the rear of the vehicle and the points are covered by a cap on the body. You’re owner’s manual will again outline where to find the equipment and point. You’ll see in this video where the points are usually located on a car.
It’s also important to keep in mind some of the other safety points we’ve been discussing in the other recovery tips and tricks articles:
- Always make sure to stand clear of vehicles being recovered
- You should stay inside your vehicle while it is being recovered/same goes if you’re in the recovery vehicle
- Make sure bystanders stay away from the scene until both vehicles are stopped
- Inspect straps and equipment before recovery — a snapped strap can cause personal and property damage
Keep these tips in mind and stay safe out there!
